The joy of relieving a fellow being of pain and illness is seamless. That is why I chose medicine as my profession and enjoyed being a doctor for last 30 years.
On completing my undergraduation in medicine at The Government Medical College Thrissur, Kerala, I found interest in the rapidly advancing field of ENT. My post-graduation trading at St Johns Medical College, Bangalore laid sturdy foundation for my knowledge in the subject. It opened the gates to field of microscopic ear surgeries, endoscopic nasal procedures, paediatric cases, airway disorders and surgical repair, neck surgery for salivary glands , thyroid and even surgeries for voice disorders.
Two important aspects of being a doctor, other than treating illness, were inculcated during the training . The first was educating both the junior colleagues and undergraduate students as well as educating the community about various health issues. Second was constant research and auditing in the field, so that one improves with each day and contributes to the scientific branch.
The DNB training that followed, went a long way in fine tuning the expertise gained. The programme moulded the patient communication skills and handling pattern, and building culture of interdisciplinary team work for better patient outcome. The culture of continuous learning and upgrading of skills was imbibed into regular routine during my tenure a Registrar, Specialist and Consultant at Manipal Hospitals, Bangalore .
